Resistance vs Negative Feedback

You need to know the difference.

Resistance is good. Your muscles need it, and more of it, if you want them to grow stronger. Without resistance, the nails holding our homes together would fall out. We could not drive our cars in a straight line on the street, and we could not walk. I remember a singular day when a thin sheet of ice had formed on the sidewalk outside my home. The ice had melted slightly and was as smooth as glass. It was so slippery I could literally not walk on it. There was almost no resistance between the bottom of my shoes and the ground, making forward movement almost impossible.

In a recent post, I talked about the resistance I was experiencing as I moved towards some big goals. This resistance is unsettling, to say the least. But I wanted to distinguish between resistance and negative feedback.

Resistance is experienced by all forward moving objects (except when they are in space). As I ride my bike I experience wind resistance. I also experience opposition from gravity as I climb hills. Yesterday, while riding, I was going uphill and against the prevailing wind. Initially, I was dismayed, but I quickly remembered that my purpose for being on my bicycle was for exercise, and the wind and the hill were providing increased health and stronger leg muscles.
