Crab Mentality

Feel a clawing downward pull? Take it as a compliment.

Are you trying to move up in the world or in your workplace, perhaps? Don’t we all want to do something better, to have more, or to be more? It’s a common goal — a part of the human experience. It is a piece of the fiber of who we are. It is a part of our very nature to become that wonderful thing we were destined to become.

When you read the quote that follows, doesn’t something inside you stir?

“The heights by great men reached and kept
Were not attained by sudden flight,
But they, while their companions slept,
Were toiling upward in the night.”

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

And when we start moving… that is the exciting part. We begin to see progress. The clouds start to part and the light filters in. The things that used to bother us don’t seem all that important anymore.

Then, in almost the same mysterious way we began to move forward, something, something dark, starts to pull us backward. In the beginning, it is often something we can’t even describe. Yet, there is some pulling motion that is hedging up our way. Initially, it is hard to detect.

I call it the “crab mentality”.
