A Millionaire’s Dirty Little Secret- part 4

This will be the final installment in the series of how I attained millionairehood without ever using a written budget. I wrote this chain of posts to let people know, by my own example, that it is indeed possible to acquire wealth by NOT using formal budgeting techniques.

What started this gush of writing was a statement Dave Ramsey made in his famous book, “The Total Money Makeover”. Basically, what he said was, “You must set up a budget, a written budget, every month.”

I love Dave. I hope I made that clear in my “Part 1” installment of this series, but I just had to disagree with the above statement. I am living proof that budgets don’t work for everyone. They work. They certainly work for some, and I do not deny this. However, budgets don’t work for everyone.

I employ a much simpler method, perhaps an old-school technique, called “pay yourself first, and save or invest the rest”.

There is a MAJOR challenge with this system, however. For example, if you did put, say 10%, of your paycheque into a savings account, it is so tempting to just spend that money when any sort of financial hiccup comes along.
