3 Methods To Reduce Worry

Worry can be like a wet blanket thrown onto the fire of our dreams. It serves no useful purpose, and we understand the ill effects intellectually, but how do we stop engaging in it? I know my anxiety is not helping me, either mentally or physically, yet I continue in the practice despite the warning signals I am getting.

The negative outcomes of worry are almost endless. Debra Fulghum Bruce, PhD, writing for WebMD, has stated that excessive worry “can lead to feelings of high anxiety and even cause you to be physically ill.” A partial list of the adverse physical outcomes Dr. Bruce sites are:

  • Suppression of the immune system
  • Digestive disorders
  • Muscle tension
  • Short-term memory loss
  • Premature coronary artery disease
  • Heart attack

Dr. Bruce also states: “If excessive worrying and high anxiety go untreated, they can lead to depression and even suicidal thoughts.”

So, yes, worry is not something we want to get involved in. We all know this. And, in spite of my knowledge of the harmful effects of my apprehensive thoughts, how can I stop?

I have been using three great methods that have given me some relief. Here they are…
